Eclectic DIY meets the landscape of the forest at Bree and Darren’s spring wedding where City Girl meets Farm Boy.
Canmore, Alberta is a city of mountains and meadows, small diners, and intoxicating views. Although a ways from their farm in Saskatchewan, Bree and Darren’s wedding could not have suited them any better. Neutral colors, her flowery Martina lLiana dress, and an eclectic decorating style set this wedding apart from any other. The wedding party spent a good part of the previous day decorating the old Cornerstone Theatre, using frames, beams, and decorations from their farm back home and items they had collected over the years. Even the flowers were picked and arranged by the bride herself.
Photographer, Eric Draht said, “The day was wedding goals, every moment. The 17 of us went from meadows to mountains, traveling up old beaten paths and embracing every breathtaking vista we found. The last photos were personal, quiet, in the heart of the forest, and the evening was a heartfelt affair, as laughter turned to happy tears. We danced late into the night, enjoying every moment of this perfect day."
Bree and Darren on the venue choice:
We chose Canmore because I grew up in BC and have spent a lot of time in the mountains. They remind me of home. Darren grew up in the prairies and spends lots of his winters (during the less busy times on the farm) snowmobiling in the mountains. So for both of us the mountains represent happiness and comfort.
Cornerstone theatre was the perfect venue choice for our vision of a "dark, moody romantic" ceremony. The Theatre has no windows so we were able to set the mood we were looking for of a dim lit ceremony with tons of candles. We loved that the guests could walk into the theatre in the middle of the day and be hit with a dark, moody ambience. Cornerstone theatre was absolutely wonderful at helping us create the exact mood we were looking for.
BREE AND DARREN ON THE DECOR:
If we were to try and give our wedding vision a tile it would be something along the lines of "Farm Gothic". The rustic wood theatre represented our life on the farm. I have always been that girl who loves a little goth fashion and metal music so we brought the two together and created a "Farm Gothic" vision. The dark rich flowers in my bouquet mixed with dark flowers in the gold Goblets, the metal lanterns and TONS of candles was the exact look we were going for. The bridesmaids held three long stem black bacara roses. We decided to keep their bouquets very simple and romantic. Black baca roses were also displayed around the venue in black vases. I (the bride) made my own bouquet as well as the goblets full of flowers. I chose the black bacara roses for the bridesmaids and decor because they scream romance to me are my favourite kind of flower. That goth side of me :)
BREE AND DARREN ON THE CEREMONY
The ambiance mixed with the songs we chose was exactly what we were looking for. Florence and the machine; "never let me go" was the song I walked down the isle to. There were quite a few tears flowing in the room. We were so happy we decided to write our own vows. Being in that moment and able to express our love and devotion for each other in front of everyone was a huge highlight. We had envisioned the ceremony so many times and it actually exceeded our expectations. Walking into a room filled with that much love and support was a once in a lifetime experience.
bree and darren on their photographer:
Eric Draht was the PERFECT wedding photographer for our vision. When we found him we knew we had to have him! haha. We wanted a passionate photographer who goes outside the box to create an album like no other. We didn't want the typical everyday photos lots of weddings have. What sets Eric apart from other photographers is that he doesn't just have technical expertise, he has the natural artistic talent that cannot be taught. Each album Eric creates has its own magical story. Eric has a very unique way of capturing each couples special day. Looking through his work is like experiencing the day as if you were there. Eric is able to capture not just the moment but the mood and emotion in that moment. When we look back on our day we can feel the mood and emotion. That is a true artist at work! We have had SO MANY people contact us in regards to our photos, asking for his contact and also telling us they have never seen such beautiful wedding photos.
bree and darren on the reception:
The fact that not a single person who attended the wedding lived in Canmore was quite special. We had 180 guests and every single one travelled to be there with us. We stayed and celebrated with everyone until the last song on the dance floor. Being able to spend such a beautiful day with our family and close friends was for sure a huge highlight as well.
